Italy's diverse geography makes it difficult to generalize about any vintage, but 2022 was universally warm and dry across Europe, including Italy.
North East
Harvest began early in mid-August in Veneto due to warm, dry conditions in June and July. While there were concerns about reduced yields and lower acid levels, early pH predictions were positive. The warm, dry weather resulted in a vintage free from disease and mold. Early-release whites from this vintage show pure, concentrated ripe fruit flavors with good freshness. Both Gini and Kofererhof consider 2022 an excellent vintage, balancing flavors and freshness.

North West
Yields were down in Piedmont due to dry conditions, but a cold winter and cooler spring helped replenish the water table before the warm summer. Harvest was slightly early, but pH levels in the must indicated good acidity despite the heat. It’s early to tell, but 2022 Nebbiolos show great concentration and promise. Meanwhile, 2019 and 2020 wines from Langhe and Barbaresco are highly anticipated. Recently released 2019 Barolos are excellent and ideal for cellaring, while charming 2018s are showing lovely perfume now. The 2010s and 2013s are gaining charm and balance, entering their drinking window. Marengo highlights the beneficial temperature differences between day and night, enhancing flavor concentration.

Central
A cool, dry winter was followed by a warm early spring with good flowering and fruit set. June, July, and August were warmer than usual, raising concerns about fruit quality. Viticulturists worked hard to provide shade and relief irrigation. Vineyards near forests or at higher altitudes retained real freshness. Rains in late July and early August helped align harvest times with the average, leading winemakers to feel positive about the wines now in barrel. Charming 2018s are still on the market, and Tuscany is excited about the stellar vintages of 2019, 2020, and 2021.

South and Islands
Southern Italy, from Puglia to Sicily, is accustomed to heat. In 2022, they enjoyed the June and July sun, but heavy rain in August revived many vines, leading to average yields and good quality fruit. Ferrara considers 2022 a good vintage, noting the healthy grapes produced wines with even more fruity flavors than usual.
