Castellucci Miano
Castellucci Miano is a relatively young project, born in 2005 on the ashes of an old social winery dating back to 1961. The name of the estate derives from the union of the two districts Castellucci and Miano. The company was taken over by a small group of contractor growers with a shared passion to create authentic Sicilian wine. They had the courage to be different by moving away from conventional production to recover the historical identity of Valledolmo on the slopes of the Madonie mountains. They enhanced two historic Sicilian grape varieties, Catarratto and Perricone, through the recovery of ancient bush-trained vineyards, now a rare heritage of biodiversity. When they started, these grape varieties were not considered suitable for high-quality wines. Today they represent the core of the production philosophy and one of the most genuine expressions of contemporary Sicilian wine.
The vineyards are located between 700 and 1000 meters a.s.l., in the Valledolmo area. They are made of very small plots, generally extending for 1 hectare each. The growers like to call them “agricultural gardens” because inside them, together with the vines, there are pear, cherry, almond and olive trees. The old vineyards in bushes are about 40 years old, for a total of 75 hectares. Distributed on the slopes of the Madonie mountains surrounding Valledolmo, they shape the natural mosaic of the territory’s beauty.
Environmental sustainability is an integral part of their philosophy and the wines are naturally organic, beyond certifications. The vineyards are cultivated according to natural farming practices such as organic fertilization with manure, exclusive use of sulfur treatments and no intensive agriculture. Castellucci Miano strives to have a sustainable production with very low content of sulfites and the use of light bottles to reduce the impact of glass in the environment. In addition, the winery is powered by renewable solar energy.
The terroir is unique due to the Sicilian warm climate combined with the impressive temperature variation typical of the mountains. Winters are generally cold and characterized by the snow while the summers are mild and fresh. As a result, the wines are terroir-driven, fresh, mineral, sapid and with a high longevity.
