The 2018 Chianti Colli Senesi is a fresh, vibrant red to drink now and over the next few years. Sweet tobacco, cedar, mint and anise overtones add aromatic nuance to a core of sweet red Sangiovese fruit. The purity of the flavors and the wine's sheer deliciousness are both notable. Medium in body, perfumed and light on its feet, the 2018 is another winner from Simone Santini. Best of all, the 2018 is a screaming value.

Underbrush, dark-skinned berries and ground clove mingle with a whiff of fragrant purple flowers on this 100% Sangiovese. Tangy and full-bodied, the savory palate doles out succulent black cherry, star anise and a hint of baking spice set against taut, dusty tannins and bright acidity. Drink through 2023. The 2021 Chianti Colli Senesi is fabulous. Rich and punchy, the 2021 offers quite a bit of intensity in its dark red Sangiovese fruit. It's a terrific wine in its peer group and for the appellation, although I must say the 14.5% alcohol is a bit surprising.

Le Calcinaie’s 2016 Chianti Colli Senesi is gorgeous. Deep, fleshy and generous, the 2016 offers terrific depth and complexity at this level and price point. Ripe dark cherry and plum fruit give the 2016 its intense feel, but there is plenty of freshness and nuance as well. The 2016 spent 10 months in cask. Best of all, 2016 is a terrific value.

Simone Santini's 2019 Ingredienti: Uva is 100% Sangiovese done with no additives at all. A burst of dark Sangiovese fruit hits the palate as this exuberant red shows off its personality. Deep, dark and full of primary fruit, the 2019 packs a serious punch. I am not sure how well the 2019 will age, but it is immensely delicious today. The stripped down style is incredibly appealing.

The 2017 Ingredienti: Uva is 100% Sangiovese fermented and aged with no SO2. The 2012 Chianti Colli Senesi Riserva Santa Maria (made with organically farmed fruit) has taken on a very interesting and attractive evolutionary trajectory. The bouquet is redolent of balsamic tones that suggest eucalyptus oil, cola and licorice. To my nose, that eucalyptus tone is by far and long the most defining. The wine is clean and direct in terms of mouthfeel, with a polished, almost glossy shine to those tannins.

From vintner Simone Santini, the Tenuta le Calcinaie 2019 Vernaccia di San Gimignano is another exciting and fresh white wine made from organic fruit. This Tuscan appellation excels in terms of the high percentage of estates that farm sustainably. In the case of this wine, you get lovely aromas of stone fruit and pear, with salty mineral notes. This is a lean-bodied white that prioritizes primary fruit; however, Tenuta le Calcinaie boasts more textural richness and depth than most. It's a great choice for fried seafood and a great value to boot.
