Review
The M. Marengo 2019 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Pugnane is a lovely wine showing bright fruit and a nice aromatic intensity that shines from the glass. You get classic Barbera tones of fresh cherry, forest berry and dried blueberry. The quality of those fruit tones is sharp and well defined, and that's what gives this wine its edge. Vigna Pugnane concludes with bright acidity and a pretty mineral accent that is subtle, but that elegantly frames the fruit. Some 5,500 bottles were released.

The 2016 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Pugnane hits all the right buttons. There is a fundamentally fresh and crunchy quality of fruit here that comes off as fresh plum or taut cherry picked right off the tree. The wine is aged in oak (most neutral barrel with a smaller percentage of new wood) for eight to ten months. The mouthfeel is broad and large with lasting intensity and delineated structure.

Marengo's 2014 Barolo is an impressive entry-level bottling. Deep, layered and persistent in the glass, the 2014 has a lot to offer. The inclusion of fruit that often goes into Marengo's single-vineyard wines has boosted quality and resulted in an especially serious, brooding Barolo. I would give this another 6-12 months, or more, to allow the tannins to soften further. Marengo's 2014 is a clear overachiever. Don't miss it.

Here's a solid expression of Nebbiolo with delicate, almost Burgundian lines. The 2014 Barolo gives off an initial impression of greater power and density. This effect does not last long because the more you contemplate the bouquet, the more you are made aware of its delicate and fine nature. There are blue fruit aromas backed by very pretty tones of crushed mineral, ash and pressed violets. The mouthfeel is broad and persistent, albeit less dense or rich compared to past vintages. Marco Marengo tells me that 2014 reminds him of the 1996 vintage, thanks to the wine's ability to maintain its natural freshness.

The Marengo family has harnessed the sunshine and the soft warmth of this vintage with an expert touch. The 2015 Barolo (with fruit sourced from four different vineyards in La Morra) is a steady, rich and softly layered expression. The wine is slightly more accessible in the near term, yet there is enough fruit density and firmness to carry it forward in time. Marco Marengo is one of the most talented winemakers in La Morra, and I highly recommend this wine for those just getting to know the complex world of Nebbiolo. Some 7,400 bottles were made.

Marco Marengo's 2016 Barolo is forward, succulent and very easy to like. Sweet tobacco, orange peel and exotic spice notes give the straight Barolo lovely aromatic complexity to play off its mid-weight structure. This is such a pretty and expressive entry-level offering. Juicy, open-knit and inviting, but with good tannic grip beneath that gives the wine its sense of energy.

Review
The M. Marengo 2016 Barolo opens to an almost exotic character with little hints of freshly cracked white pepper, pressed violets, powdered licorice root and touches of clove and cinnamon that are playfully sprinkled throughout as this wine changes and evolves in the glass. The curious thing about this wine is that I am reminded of Nebbiolo, but not only. Those distinctive white pepper notes recall Pelaverga or maybe Freisa (another red grape of the Langhe area that, according to some researchers, could be related to Nebbiolo). This wine puts on quite a beautiful showing, and those savory or spicy notes are cleverly downplayed to give more prominence to the beautifully pure and brilliant fruit on hand. This wine represents a blend of fruit from various sites in La Morra (Serradenari, Boiolo, Fossati and Roncaglie), and together they paint a very authentic portrait of this Barolo village known for delicate, floral and softly graceful expressions of Barolo. Some 16,300 bottles were made.

This wine draws its fruit from the Serradenari, Boiolo, Fossati and Roncaglie vineyards in La Morra. The M. Marengo 2017 Barolo achieves a level of immediate elegance and balance that was by no means easy to achieve in this challenging and hot vintage. The Marengo family has successfully harnessed the floral and more graceful side of the vintage fruit, with wild berry and powdered licorice. You do feel the youthful tannic tightness in this release, so give this wine a few extra years to unwind and soften. This was a release of 10,700 bottles.

Marco Marengo manages little more than four hectares in La Morra. His Brunate is a wine to look out for, but in a dry vintage such as 2017, the blended wine from his passionate vintner is no less interesting. The grapes were sourced from Fontanazza, Brunate, Bricco delle Viole and Pugnane. It exhibits leafy lightness with orange peel and cocoa powder. The attack is firm, muscular yet ripe. Dense on the mid-palate, it has bracing acidity combined with eminently savory orange fruit. The finish is chiselled, with a good length of fruits and liquorice.

It will require a few more years of bottle age for sure. The fruit used is a blend from the four vineyard sites farmed by this family in La Morra. Production is 10,000 bottles.

The 2014 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is a wine with a very distinct and identifiable aromatic personality. Maybe it's the power of suggestion, but the vineyard name Bricco delle Viole says it all. There is a strong floral signature here with pressed blue violets in a leading role. This is a delicate and graceful expression with nuanced aromas and a profound sense of depth. The lighter and more finessed nature of the cool 2014 vintage jibes very well with that central floral theme.

The 2015 Barolo Bricco delle Viole shows all the energy and linear drive that is typical of this side, even if the wine remains a bit compact today, with less of the generosity that it can show in some vintages. Dark and cherry, chalk, mint and floral notes are woven throughout this expressive, nervy Barolo. The purity of the flavors is striking. Time in the glass brings out a bit of the mid-palate sweetness that is missing at the outset. There is so much to like in this pretty, expressive Barolo from Marengo.

In cooler vintages, the Bricco delle Viole site produces wines with strong floral aromatics that range from blue wildflowers to rose hip. However, the warmer-vintage 2015 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is a very different wine that breaks away from its predecessors. The quality of the aromas is darker, more saturated, and it veers toward black and purple fruit more than those characteristic floral tones. This is a more impactful Barolo with broad shoulders, depth and firmly integrated tannins. It walks with a heavier gait compared to past vintages, but it covers the palate beautifully. About 6,000 bottles were produced.

Speaking from the heart, this is probably my favorite wine from M. Marengo. The 2016 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is a wine that always stands out in my tastings thanks to its very special bouquet. I am reminded of flowers, with hints of rose hip, lavender and, of course, violets, after which this cru site is named. Fruit comes from a one-hectare plot in the comune of Barolo at about 420 meters above sea level (a slightly higher and cooler site). You can almost taste the cool, calcareous soils here thanks to those delicate and fragile aromas. This 2016 vintage offers a bit more power and density, and that floral signature is slightly downplayed in favor of red fruit and wild berries. This vintage offers just a tad more concentration and darkness, with the textural tightness that beckons for many more years of cellar aging. With time, those beautiful fruit flavors will become more relaxed and polished. There's that hint of crushed white pepper again, which we saw in the classic Barolo. It pops up in this wine like a little sparkle at the very end. Some 6,100 bottles were made.

The labels used in this flight of Barolo are very intuitive, as the shade of orange used in the printing grows darker to correspond with the tasting order of increased structure and concentration. A release of about 6,000 bottles, the M. Marengo 2017 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is presented in a medium-orange color, telling you it is a degree lighter than the Brunate but a degree heavier than the classic Barolo. The wine shows wild berry fruit, sour cherry, dried violet and lilac, with dried licorice root and aniseed. You'll notice the tannins, especially if this wine is tasted too young, so give it time.

Marengo is a small estate based in La Morra, managed by Marco Marengo and his family. A boutique winery with a slightly modern style - small barrels, vinification without submerged cap - they claim vines in some of the best MGAs. Dark, concentrated and full of sucrosity on the palate, it has chewy, ripe tannins, great volume, and quite a youthful, sticky finish. Precised extraction should make for a great wine in time.

Marengo's 2012 Barolo Riserva Brunate is gorgeous. Deep, powerful and translucent, it exudes class in all of its elements. There is plenty of Brunate character in the glass. The 2012 is quite deep and richly textured, especially within the context of the year. In particular, the oak, while present, is also nicely balanced at this stage. As always, it will be interesting to see how the Riserva ages, given that development in bottle has been something of an Achilles’ heel in other vintages.

The 2012 Barolo Riserva Brunate is distinguished by two additional years of bottle aging (as opposed to barrel aging). Indeed, that extra time in a closed, oxygen-free container has slowed the wine's evolution. I'd suggest waiting a few years before popping the cork. You can also count on this beautiful Barolo to need an extra long drinking window as its continues its evolution. The bouquet offers a flurry of aromatic activity with lively intensity, dark fruits and spicy complexity. The mouthfeel offers elegantly polished tannins. Marco Marengo says the 2012 vintage represents a marriage of the elegant 2010 growing seasons and the fruity exuberance of 2011.

Still a bit shy on the nose. This has more polish than most 2014 Barolos. Thanks to the rather elegant and dry tannins, there is a lot of the drive. The finish is fresh and fairly long. Drink or hold.

The 2014 Barolo Brunate is another powerful, imposing wine from Marco Marengo. Deep and pliant through the middle, with a huge core of fruit, the 2014 has much to offer. Black cherry, plum, lavender, leather and smoke infuse the deep, resonant finish. It will be interesting to see how the 2014 ages. At this stage, it clearly holds quite a bit of promise. In 2014, there is no Riserva; all the fruit was used for this, the straight Brunate bottling.

The 2014 Barolo Brunate takes us to the more structured and robust side of the Nebbiolo spectrum. The Brunate cru in La Morra is known for its deeply saturated, enriched and elegant wines. This expression from Marco Marengo makes sure that a healthy dose of sheer elegance is part of that formula. The lighter and more ethereal character of the cool 2014 vintage also comes through. The results shown here are polished and finely textured, with blue fruit and dried currant followed by tar, licorice and spice. The finish is long and silky with excellent tannic management.

The 2015 Barolo Brunate is another enticing wine in this range. Black cherry, spice, leather and licorice all flesh out in the glass. The breadth and textural resonance that are such signatures of Brunate emerge effortlessly. I would give the 2015 a few years in the bottle to come together. Even in the early going, the 2015 exused class. The Brunate is the darkest and most powerful wine in this range.

The 2015 Barolo Brunate is decidedly not a shy wine. It opens to dark color saturation and varietal aromas that are dark and thick in character. That characteristic power and determination of the Brunate cru is played forward with perfect pitch. This wine shows compact and firm structure, like tight bricks layered one on top of the other, to form the density and richness that makes such a lasting impact on the palate. Some 3,700 bottles were created.

The 2016 Barolo Brunate is soft, perfumed and very pretty. Sweet tobacco, cedar, mint, dried flowers and anise all grace this expressive, mid-weight Barolo. Overall, this is a decidedly lightweight, perfumed style of Brunate, a site where the wines tend to be richer, deeper, and more powerful; I would prefer to drink it over the next decade, give or take.

The 2016 Barolo Brunate is the most Nebbiologgiante of these new releases from Marco Marengo. As you would expect of a wine from the Brunate cru, the wine opens to a dark, sultry and beautifully saturated color with red brick or crimson highlights. The bouquet follows the Nebbiolo playlist faithfully with bright aromas of dried cherry, dark fruits, plums, moist earth, licorice and savory tobacco. Whereas Marengo's other two Barolo releases (the Barolo classico and the Bricco delle Viole) offer a stronger floral signature with hints of white pepper, this Barolo from a one-hectare plot (with limestone calcareous soils at 350 meters above sea level) is focused on dark fruit, spice and leather. It also shows a significant tannic structure and dense fiber that arguably makes this a more important or full-bodied alternative. In short, there is considerably more power and strength in this beautiful wine, and it should hold in your cellar for 20 years or more. Only 5,000 bottles were made.

The 2017 Barolo Brunate shows why this is such a highly-regarded site. Powerful and deep, the 2017 has enough fruit and pedigree to keep the formidable tannins in check. Blue/purplish fruit, spice, leather, licorice and menthol gain volume as the 2017 opens in the glass. This brooding Barolo needs time in bottle, but it is pretty compelling, even in the early going.

With fruit from La Morra, the 2017 Barolo Brunate presents a taut and tight bouquet of candied cherry, violets, orange peel and iron ore. The aromas are fluid and agile, yet they are also quite polished and focused. Indeed, this Brunate offers the greatest degree of complexity and sheer depth in this portfolio from the Marengo family of La Morra. Again, we see those extra tight tannins that are such a common feature of Barolo wines from the hot and dry 2017 vintage. This was a release of 4,800 bottles.

Fruit for this wine comes from a 1.2-hectare site with classic calcareous soils. The 2018 Barolo Brunate is very different from the other two wines in this portfolio. Brunate shows a higher level of intensity and boldness with dark fruit, sweet plum, rusty nail and garden soil. This expression is also best equipped with integrated tannins and freshness to continue on a steady aging trajectory. I love that subtle note of sweetness that appears on the finish. This is a 5,800-bottle release.

The 2019 Barolo Brunate is a feshy and hearty Nebbiolo with ample structure and staying power. The bouquet offers dark fruit, candied plum, blue flower, spice and rusty mineral. There is a hint of rosemary sprig or forest bramble as well. Brunate ends with almost metallic-like notes that are characteristic of this vineyard cru, and the wine has plenty of structure to carry it through more years of bottle age. Production is 6,000 bottles.

Marengo 2013 Barolo Riserva Brunate is a potent wine. There is plenty of brightness and energy, but whether or not the 2013 ever grows into the case, the Riserva is decidedly pushed in style, which I am not sure the wine really needs or benefits from. Bright red cherry, plum, blood orange, chalk, spice and floral notes add striking nuance. Today, the Riserva is decidedly austere.

Here's a dramatic change from night to day or day to night. I tasted the M. Marengo 2015 Barolo Riserva Brunate after the three Barolo wines this estate released from the 2017 vintage. Those wines are tightly wound and astringent, and then you get to this 900-bottle release Riserva that is loose-knit, swinging far and wide with a huge range of dark fruit aromas. These include cherry liqueur, tobacco, powdered licorice and tarry smoke. The bouquet is slow, weighty and sensuous in a way that only the sunny 2015 vintage can manage.

Not many producers had the courage to make a Riserva in this vintage that saw hot temperatures and very dry weather. The M. Marengo 2017 Barolo Riserva Brunate (in the dark brown label) does indeed deliver a darker and more robust quality of fruit with thick textural support at the back. However, the wine is never too ripe. It offers more power overall and a specific aroma of licorice or toasted aniseed that accompanies dark fruit and spice. Fruit is selected from the oldest vines in Brunate. This is a tiny production of just 700 bottles.

Nebbiolo from the Valmaggiore vineyard in Roero is quickly becoming one of my Italian wine passions. Only a handful of Piedmont producers make wine here and one of them is the Marengo family. The vineyard parcel belonged to Eugenia Marengo's (Marco's wife) family. Valmaggiore has dramatically vertical slopes that would be terraced in any other part of the world in order to make working here easier. For whatever reason, terraces were never built here, making for dangerously slippery conditions during rain. The 2016 Nebbiolo d'Alba Vigna Valmaggiore sees fruit sourced from 60-year-old vines. This wine offers an excellent starting point for those who want to taste the special Valmaggiore Nebbiolo. Keeping in character, this wine delivers a unique aromatic profile with dried violets and herbs. The mouthfeel shows deep complexity and brilliant freshness.

The 2019 Nebbiolo d'Alba Vigna Valmaggiore shows good concentration and a robust bouquet with dark fruit and nutty aromas that remind me of toasted hazelnuts or almonds. Those nutty aromas segue to earthy truffle and potting soil that are also specific to this bottle. Some of my favorite producers offer a Nebbiolo from the Valmaggiore cru in Roero on the left banks of the Tanaro River, and I always recommend them enthusiastically, both for the quality of the fruit and the competitive price points. This release shows a hint of white pepper at the back of its pretty, dark fruit. Some 6,500 bottles were produced.
