Review
The organic Famiglia Statella 2021 Etna Bianco is a blend of 90% Carricante and 10% Catarratto from volcanic soils in the village of Randazzo, where the streets are paved with black lava rock. This wine really stands out for its elegance and extreme sharpness. The bouquet offers hints of brioche, almond ice cream, salty nut and wild chamomile. The mouthfeel is mildly velvety but also rigid and fresh.

Such a crisp and juicy rosé with lively stone-fruit and red-berry aromas. Only medium-bodied with a long, very refreshing finish, where a hint of tannin and some minerality add interest. From organically grown grapes. Drink now.

Review
The pretty yet understated 2021 Rosato Etna lifts up to show sweet rose, white strawberries and hints of smoke. It’s soft, pure and savory in character, with perfumed white strawberry and mineral tones within. This leaves the palate classically dry yet refreshed, while nuances of raw almond slowly taper o!. Very nice. This is a blend of 80% Nerello Mascalese and 20% Nerello Cappuccio.

Review
Made with organic Nerello Mascalese and a smaller part of Nerello Cappuccio, the Famiglia Statella 2021 Etna Rosato shows a light pink color and cassis-like aromas that remind me of Bandol from the south of France. This is a classic Etna rosé that is both tonic and sharp, with lilac, white almond and salty end notes.

A firm and silky red with dried-berry and strawberry character. Full and chewy with lots of phenolic depth and tension. Flavorful and rich. Drink or hold. Better in 2020.

Review
Bright red-ruby. Very aromatic nose of sweet spices and riper red cherry, with flashes of raspberry liqueur and strawberry jam thrown in for good measure. Enters round, luscious and with outstanding inner-mouth perfume, then risingly tannic on the classically dry, mouthcoating finish. Improves markedly in the glass, showcasing a combination of minerals and of red fruit cocktail. Aged roughly ten months in used oak tonneaux, this ought to age well. From a fifteen year old vineyard of roughly 90% Nerello Mascalese and 10% Nerello Cappuccio in the Solicchiata area. Only 5,000 bottles made; outstanding first time wine from Calogero Statella, technical director at Tenuta delle Terre Nere. A star is born.

Review
Vivid deep red. Very juicy red cherry and minerals on the nose and in the mouth. This is characterized by a ripe mouthfeel, remarkably suave tannins and a hint of white pepper plus cinnamon on the long back end. It is also very different from the 2016 Pettinociarelle that was more refined, while this 2017 is more nectar-like and ripe (though still very elegant). Ages mostly in old tonneaux and just a few used barriques; the oak is extremely judiciously used. Calogero Statella has another winner on his hands: this wine is yet another knockout (only the second vintage made).

Review
The Famiglia Statella 2020 Etna Rosso Pettinociarelle is 90% Nerello Mascalese and 10% Nerello Cappuccio, and the grapes are organic. This is another beautiful wine from this excellent under-the-radar estate. The bouquet is infused with smoke and ash, but there is plenty of fruit tension and crispness at the core. You can't help by admire the careful work in what was a hot and not totally carefree vintage.

Review
The 2019 Etna Rosso Pettinociarelle bursts from the glass with a blend of medicinal blackberries and balsamic spice. This flows across the palate with ripe wild berry fruits carried across silky textural waves. A tart tinge of sour cherry mounts toward the close. The 2019 tapers off with youthful tension and a coating of fine-grain tannins, ending with a tangerine hint.

Review
The 2018 Etna Rosso Pignatùni Vecchie Vigne impresses with an intense display of raspberries, crushed pomegranates and clove, further complemented by dusty rose tones and smoke nuances. This is silky and pliant in feel with a pure display of woodland berries and minerals, that give way to a saturation of exotic spices and inner florals. A subtle tug of fine tannin lingers, as this tapers off to notes of licorice and hard red candies. The Pignatùni is a highly enjoyable single-vineyard Etna Rosso from the Northern slope that works hard to find balance from the difficult 2018 vintage. I’m interested in seeing what awaits with the release of the 2019 next year. Unfortunately, only 70 cases were produced. This is the passion project of Calogero Statella, who has been the winemaker at Terre Nere since 2007.

Review
With fruit from ancient vines, the Famiglia Statella 2019 Etna Rosso Pignatuni offers medium-rich concentration and presents a detailed bouquet with cassis, grilled herb, lavender and white pepper. The wine offers ample dimension and energy with a polished, linear style. This wine hits it out of the ballpark.

Review
The 2020 Etna Rosso Pignatuni Vecchie Vigne captivates with a spice-box blend of dusty rose and dried citrus, giving way to cloves and shavings of cedar. This is elegant and refined, with polished red and blue fruits that flow across a wave of brisk acidity. The 2020 slowly saturates the palate with primary concentration and licorice hints, leaving grippy tannins and a tinge of balsam herbs to slowly fade.
