Review
The top-scoring wine in my book from this cute villa and winery, the Casa al Vento 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Foho (made with organic Sangiovese) offers an initial layer of dark fruit and rich concentration followed by blackberry, dried cherry, spice and plum. It brings a good deal of upfront aromatic intensity, capped off by medium richness and mid-weight length. The estate recommends the local pheasant dish, fagiano al senese, for this wine, which sounds absolutely perfect.

This has a pretty nose of dried flowers, sour cherries, lemon peel and spice box. Some balsamic. It’s medium- to full-bodied, with vibrant acidity and tasty layers of spiced berry fruit. Polished tannins. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Review
Sangiovese with a small addition of Merlot, the 2011 Chianti Classico Riserva Foho shows dark and savory aromas of cured meat and dried fruit. Earthy notes of crushed stone and granite also appear. This is a masculine and brooding expression that shows a high degree of elegance and power (especially with the 14.5% alcohol). Licorice and barbecue smoke replace the obvious fruit.

This has aromas of lemon leaves, sesame and poached berries. A little rustic but fun, with slightly rough tannins, a medium body and a firm finish. Try in 2024.

Underbrush, leather and a whiff of game form the earthy nose. Racy and focused, the linear palate offers red cherry, orange zest licorice and sage alongside grippy, grainy tannins that dry out the finish.

Wild berry, sun-baked earth, tobacco and crushed violet aromas form the nose. The elegant palate evokes mature Marasca cherry, cranberry, star anise and crushed herb framed in taut, fine-grained tannins. Drink through 2023.

Review
A blend of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot, this lively, structured wine opens with aromas of underbrush, violet, woodland berries and peppery notes. The succulent palate delivers a core of vibrant red cherry accented with white pepper, cinnamon and a hint of vanilla alongside solid but refined tannins. Delicious now but hold a few years for complexity. Drink 2015–2010. Votto Vines Importing, Slocum & Sons, Genesis Marketing Concepts.

Red berry, pressed violet, tilled soil and a whiff of tobacco lead the nose. Firm and refined, the delicious palate doles out wild cherry, crushed black raspberry, mint, white pepper and menthol. Tightly knit but polished tannins and fresh acidity provide structure.
