Review
The 2015 Recioto della Valpolicella Classico le Calcarole is super dark, and the wine coats the glass with a thick veiling, presenting cigar ash and cooked cherry on the bouquet. It's soft, super intense but very nice, with ripe fruit and sweet raisins—a great choice for short ribs. The Mazzi family uses the tried-and-true blend of grapes here: 60% Corvina, 10% Corvinone, 20% Rondinella and 10% Molinara, but this wine sees a longer appassimento time, at 120 days. Winemaking is terminated with 24 months in French oak, and this supplies the toast and the spiciness you taste on the sweet, syrupy finish. This wine is only made in the best years, and the last time we saw it produced was in 2011. Some 5,000 375-milliliter bottles were produced.
