Notes of eucalyptus, juniper, cherry and fresh-cut grass are the highlights of this vibrant red. Steely, with a backbone of iron and a lingering finish. Best from 2022 through 2040.

Review
Pira's 2015 Barolo Margheria is powerful and driven, with that backbone of tannin that always differentiates it in this range. Iron, smoke, tobacco, game, licorice and incense add layers of savory, feral intensity. Potent and a touch linear, the 2015 is long on character, but it also needs time for the tannins to soften. Even so, it has tons of potential. Chalk, white pepper and a floral linger on the vibrant finish. This is very nicely done.

Menthol, tar and black cherry flavors highlight this taut red, picking up underbrush notes as this builds to a compact finish. Shows the dense, finely woven and steely character of Serralunga, with balance and grace. Best from 2023 through 2040. 400 cases made.

Aromas of tar, asphalt, dark fruit and bark. Plenty of blackberry and some dark cherry. It’s full-bodied and very tight with a linear, racy finish. Chewy and focused. Vertical, taking you down through the palate. Drink after 2024.

Review
The 2017 Barolo Margheria is a beguiling Serralunga Barolo redolent of dried herbs, tobacco, menthol, graphite, licorice, crushed rock and blood orange. Tightly wound and not fully expressive, the 2017 needs a few years in bottle to soften. The 2017s nicely done.

Review
The Pira family farms several of the most important single-vineyard sites in Serralunga d'Alba, and this one has 50-year-old vines. The Luigi Pira 2017 Barolo Margheria offers a hint of the vintage ripeness with some wild strawberry and dried raspberry. In fact, those sweet fruit flavors emerge here in the Margheria more than they do in the other crus sites from this estate that are now on the market. That extra degree of softness gives this wine a more immediate and accessible personality.

Review
Aromas of cherries and raspberries, enriched by perfumed oak. Full-bodied with a dense, silky bead of fruit and tannin that gives good length. The fruit and oak tannins are nicely integrated here, giving a grainy, velvety framework to the wine. The fruit persists nicely. Excellent quality here, but give it another couple of years for even better integration. Best from 2024.

Review
The 2018 Barolo Margheria is gorgeous. Hints of truffle, orange peel, cedar, pipe tobacco and kirsch on the bouquet are immediately alluring. This deceptively mid-weight Serralunga Barolo offers tons of aromatic and flavor complexity. It's one of the finer recent versions I can remember tasting and a huge success for the vintage.

Review
Fermentation takes place in horizontal tanks at moderate temperature for 12-15 days, before ageing in large 25hl wooden barrels for 24 months. The austere nose shows restrained dark fruits, liquorice root, straw, and red currant freshness. It shows a soft attack then firm, extracted, fine-grained tannins; muscular and chewy and evident on the guns, but polished on the finish. A powerful wine that needs time.

Review
The 2019 Barolo Margheria is more savory/mineral in profile than the other Barolos in the range, with less overt fruit but plenty of persistence. In recent years, Gianpaolo Pira has found a way to tame the formidable tannins here, and that is very much evident in this gorgeous, expressive Barolo.
