Review
Usually a lifted, delicate wine, the 2014 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is dark, imposing and very much closed in on itself. The fruit profile is also quite a bit darker than is typically the case. Today, the 2014 is potent, austere and in need of cellaring in order to soften. Readers will have to be patient.

Aromas of blackberries, walnuts and cigar box. Ash and black cherries, too. Full-bodied, deep and juicy. Tannic and structured for the vintage. Tar and rose-petal aftertaste. Needs three or four years to soften. Try in 2021.

Review
The 2014 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is a wine with a very distinct and identifiable aromatic personality. Maybe it's the power of suggestion, but the vineyard name Bricco delle Viole says it all. There is a strong floral signature here with pressed blue violets in a leading role. This is a delicate and graceful expression with nuanced aromas and a profound sense of depth. The lighter and more finessed nature of the cool 2014 vintage jibes very well with that central floral theme.

Review
The 2015 Barolo Bricco delle Viole shows all the energy and linear drive that is typical of this side, even if the wine remains a bit compact today, with less of the generosity that it can show in some vintages. Dark and cherry, chalk, mint and floral notes are woven throughout this expressive, nervy Barolo. The purity of the flavors is striking. Time in the glass brings out a bit of the mid-palate sweetness that is missing at the outset. There is so much to like in this pretty, expressive Barolo from Marengo.

Review
In cooler vintages, the Bricco delle Viole site produces wines with strong floral aromatics that range from blue wildflowers to rose hip. However, the warmer-vintage 2015 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is a very different wine that breaks away from its predecessors. The quality of the aromas is darker, more saturated, and it veers toward black and purple fruit more than those characteristic floral tones. This is a more impactful Barolo with broad shoulders, depth and firmly integrated tannins. It walks with a heavier gait compared to past vintages, but it covers the palate beautifully. About 6,000 bottles were produced.

This vibrant red is rich and harmonious, offering cherry, raspberry, menthol, wild herb and tar flavors that are nicely integrated into the solid structure, extending with a persistent aftertaste of fruit and savory elements. Best from 2022 through 2045. 400 cases made, 200 cases imported.

Review
Speaking from the heart, this is probably my favorite wine from M. Marengo. The 2016 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is a wine that always stands out in my tastings thanks to its very special bouquet. I am reminded of flowers, with hints of rose hip, lavender and, of course, violets, after which this cru site is named. Fruit comes from a one-hectare plot in the comune of Barolo at about 420 meters above sea level (a slightly higher and cooler site). You can almost taste the cool, calcareous soils here thanks to those delicate and fragile aromas. This 2016 vintage offers a bit more power and density, and that floral signature is slightly downplayed in favor of red fruit and wild berries. This vintage offers just a tad more concentration and darkness, with the textural tightness that beckons for many more years of cellar aging. With time, those beautiful fruit flavors will become more relaxed and polished. There's that hint of crushed white pepper again, which we saw in the classic Barolo. It pops up in this wine like a little sparkle at the very end. Some 6,100 bottles were made.

Review
The 2016 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is dark, powerful and austere. At the same time, the Bricco delle Viole has more fruit depth and overall intensity than it normally does. This needs time in bottle to fully emerge, but it is quite promising and very pretty, even in the early going. Deep, rich and chocolatey with well-integrated oak, the 2016 is both intriguing and promising.

The 2017 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is a powerful, driving wine. All the signatures of this site are amplified in 2017. There is plenty of that distinctive red berry fruit but the tannins are also pretty imposing. It will be interesting to see where this goes.

Review
The labels used in this flight of Barolo are very intuitive, as the shade of orange used in the printing grows darker to correspond with the tasting order of increased structure and concentration. A release of about 6,000 bottles, the M. Marengo 2017 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is presented in a medium-orange color, telling you it is a degree lighter than the Brunate but a degree heavier than the classic Barolo. The wine shows wild berry fruit, sour cherry, dried violet and lilac, with dried licorice root and aniseed. You'll notice the tannins, especially if this wine is tasted too young, so give it time.

Review
The 2018 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is weightless, ethereal and classic in feel, as Barolos from this site so often are. Crushed flowers, mint, sweet red cherry, anise and rose petal are nicely lifted. Marco Marengo has done a nice job in taming the typically incisive Bricco dell Viole tannins. This is beautifully done.

The 2018 Barolo Bricco delle Viole (with 6,000 bottles made) opens to a medium rich appearance followed by very distinct aromas of wild rose, grilled herb, mint and freshly milled white pepper. The wine's texture is lean but fine-tuned and elegant. These qualities shape a long and polished mouthfeel. Fruit comes from a one-hectare parcel at a breezy 420 meters in elevation.

Review
Marengo is a small estate based in La Morra, managed by Marco Marengo and his family. A boutique winery with a slightly modern style - small barrels, vinification without submerged cap - they claim vines in some of the best MGAs. This Bricco delle Viole 2019 shows all the freshness expected from this MGA, with sweet violet soaked with pomegranate, liquorice and smoky woodland. Dark, concentrated and full of sucrosity on the palate, it has chewy, ripe tannins, great volume, and quite a youthful, sticky finish. Precised extraction should make for a great wine in time.

This is a wine I always love, thanks to its distinctive grace and foral notes of wild rose and lilac. The M. Marengo 2019 Barolo Bricco delle Viole shows more heft and concentration in this growing season, and it's visible in its darker color. The bouquet is also compact and more robust at the same time with cassis, light spice and candied orange peel. Mineral dustings make for an elegant end note, and the tannins show the Frmness of youth. Production is 6,000 bottles.

Really beautiful and so clear and vivid. Plum, peach, strawberry and stone aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied with clear and poised fruit and fine and polished tannins and a refined and crafted finish. Already so beautiful to taste (drink) but there’s such balance and presence in the wine. Drink after 2028 but hard not to touch now.

This MGA is located on the steep hill that rises from Barolo toward the village of La Morra, and vines sit between 390 to 480 meters in elevation. The M. Marengo 2020 Barolo Bricco delle Viole offers a delicate bouquet with proverbial violet-like aromas that filter through redcurrant and ripe cherry. There is a hint of something spicy in this vintage that recalls pink peppercorn or toasted herb. The tannins are strong, and there's good acidity with a velveteen close. Only 6,000 bottles were made.
