Aromas of dark fruit and hints of cinnamon and spices follow through to a full body, firm and silky tannins with lovely freshness and focus at the finish. Very finely textured and subtly complex. Drink or hold.

Review
Marengo 2013 Barolo Riserva Brunate is a potent wine. There is plenty of brightness and energy, but whether or not the 2013 ever grows into the case, the Riserva is decidedly pushed in style, which I am not sure the wine really needs or benefits from. Bright red cherry, plum, blood orange, chalk, spice and floral notes add striking nuance. Today, the Riserva is decidedly austere.

Dried berries and dark chocolate with some coffee and walnut undertones. Full-bodied with a firm tannin structure and a flavorful finish. This needs time to open and come together. Try after 2024.

Review
Here's a dramatic change from night to day or day to night. I tasted the M. Marengo 2015 Barolo Riserva Brunate after the three Barolo wines this estate released from the 2017 vintage. Those wines are tightly wound and astringent, and then you get to this 900-bottle release Riserva that is loose-knit, swinging far and wide with a huge range of dark fruit aromas. These include cherry liqueur, tobacco, powdered licorice and tarry smoke. The bouquet is slow, weighty and sensuous in a way that only the sunny 2015 vintage can manage.

Review
The 2016 Barolo Riserva Brunate is attractive, to be sure, but much of its fruit and overall intensity have been overwhelmed by the oak. This lacks the intensity and resonance of the best wines of the year. More importantly, Marengo has the fruit to make a great, great Barolo. That is the bar here.

The M. Marengo 2016 Barolo Riserva Brunate is released in a tiny production of just 700 bottles. From an iconic vintage, the wine is beautifully balanced and intense with wild berry aromas that segue gently to spice, tarry smoke and powdered licorice. This vintage really shows the incredible depth and detail that the Nebbiolo grape is capable of rendering, especially in deft hands such as these. This is one for your cellar.

Review
Not many producers had the courage to make a Riserva in this vintage that saw hot temperatures and very dry weather. The M. Marengo 2017 Barolo Riserva Brunate (in the dark brown label) does indeed deliver a darker and more robust quality of fruit with thick textural support at the back. However, the wine is never too ripe. It offers more power overall and a specific aroma of licorice or toasted aniseed that accompanies dark fruit and spice. Fruit is selected from the oldest vines in Brunate. This is a tiny production of just 700 bottles.
