Review
The 2018 Etna Rosso Pignatùni Vecchie Vigne impresses with an intense display of raspberries, crushed pomegranates and clove, further complemented by dusty rose tones and smoke nuances. This is silky and pliant in feel with a pure display of woodland berries and minerals, that give way to a saturation of exotic spices and inner florals. A subtle tug of fine tannin lingers, as this tapers off to notes of licorice and hard red candies. The Pignatùni is a highly enjoyable single-vineyard Etna Rosso from the Northern slope that works hard to find balance from the difficult 2018 vintage. I’m interested in seeing what awaits with the release of the 2019 next year. Unfortunately, only 70 cases were produced. This is the passion project of Calogero Statella, who has been the winemaker at Terre Nere since 2007.

Review
With fruit from ancient vines, the Famiglia Statella 2019 Etna Rosso Pignatuni offers medium-rich concentration and presents a detailed bouquet with cassis, grilled herb, lavender and white pepper. The wine offers ample dimension and energy with a polished, linear style. This wine hits it out of the ballpark.

Review
The 2020 Etna Rosso Pignatuni Vecchie Vigne captivates with a spice-box blend of dusty rose and dried citrus, giving way to cloves and shavings of cedar. This is elegant and refined, with polished red and blue fruits that flow across a wave of brisk acidity. The 2020 slowly saturates the palate with primary concentration and licorice hints, leaving grippy tannins and a tinge of balsam herbs to slowly fade.
