Review
The cedar riffs of French oak segue to bitter cherry, raspberry bon bon, alpine herb and Pastis, marking the finish. This is a slick, contemporary Amarone on one hand, without pushing any buttons of winemaking intrusiveness, on the other. Another red here that reminds me of a ripe, chunkier Pinot. Beautifully transparent, deft of touch with chiffon like of structure. I like the style. The oak, used to beautiful effect. 'Medium drying' of the fruit (2 mths),in a highly ventilated mountainous setting, is the key. This mitigates any malevolent botrytic development. The end result is floral, lifted, juicy, sappy and while concentrated, so very fresh. Drink or hold.

Review
Dark and smoky in the glass, the 2015 Amarone della Valpolicella Monte Serea smolders up with a blend of grilled herbs, crushed ashen stone and dried black cherries. This is velvety-smooth, nearly glycerol in feel, with depths of saline minerals to balance. Rosemary hints toward the close o!set an opulent wave of ripe red and black fruits. The 2015 finishes dramatically long and spicy, with a bump of residual acidity that adds a completely unexpected yet welcome freshness.

Review
Though better known for their exceptional Soave, brothers Claudio and Sandro Gini also produce red wines from their Tenuta Scajari at Cazzano di Tramigna. Their Amarone Monte Serea is a youthful ruby colour with smoky grey/violet shadings. Very scented, it displays aromas of dried and candied fig, cranberry, cherry and orange peel. Full and ripe with sure-footed, lush flavours of fresh and dried fruit, its lovely acidity helps maintain impressive freshness, while a gentle, nuance finish enhances this really stylish wine. Delightful.

Review
The 2010 Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva Scajari lifts up with a refined display of black cherries, lavender and white smoke. With coaxing, it blossoms further, adding depths of exotic spice and purple-tinged flowers. It’s silky and pure with a savory display of pure red fruits and inner herbal tones, as cooling minerality collects toward the close. There’s wonderful symmetry here, tapering off remarkably fresh yet also with a coating of fine tannins, which should carry the Scajari for another decade or more in a cool cellar. That said, don’t come here looking for a powerful or extroverted expression of Amarone, because this is all about elegance and poise.

A lovely, expressive red, with a fragrant nose of cured tobacco and forest floor transitioning to flavors of black cherry reduction, soft fig, anise hyssop and mineral on the silky palate. Review
The 2011 Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva Scajari is brooding and backward as a whi! of freshly shaved pine gives way to black currants, earth tones and a lifting hint of camphor. This floods the palate with silky textures and opulent red fruits, all nicely contrasted by brisk acidity and a core of salty minerality that adds tension. The Riserva Scajari leaves the mouth aching with youthful structure as grippy tannins saturate, and a primary staining of concentration is left lingering. This massive Amarone Riserva is built for the cellar.

This address excels with styles that respect tradition, while pondering better, fresher approaches. A longer drying period (still only three months to others' six). Sweet florals and lemon zest accentuate crushed green apples as the wickedly fresh 2013 Brut Camillo blossoms in the glass. This is energetic. Crystalline bubbles and a core of vibrant acidity perfectly o!set its ripe orchard fruits. It leaves a pretty inner sweetness and candied lime hints while finishing remarkably fresh yet potent. The balance here is gorgeous. The Camillo is a sparkling blend of Garganega, Chardonnay and Pinot Nero. Disgorged: 2023.

Among the greatest sweet wines in the world. Let's get that straight. Only equalled by Germany. There is density and concentration sure, but the drying process of the grapes evinces an uncanny phenolic authority as much as the altitude of the vineyard sourcing and saline tendency of the volcanic soils, impart freshness. Despite the generosity of quince paste, torrefied almond and the bitter orange marmalade pithy finish, this is akin to an electric toothbrush whirring through the mouth and sweeping the sugar away to the point of palpable dryness. Brilliant!

Among the most profound wines tasted during this year's journey across the Veneto. By definition, this is a metodo classico ancestrale, spending a whooping 13 years on its lees. The fruit is all from the Foscarino vineyard, delivering notes of bitter almonds, quince, orange marmalade and roasted chestnuts. While this is undeniably sweet, the confluence of acidity, fizz and resinous tertiary notes makes more for a meditational wine over anything for dessert. A brilliant maverick defined by profundity and breathtaking beauty. Drink or hold.

A blaze of honeysuckle, orange blossom, glazed quince and the tropical realm of mango skin and pineapple chunks, attest to the botrytised material at the core of this cuvee. Luscious and bright, with tamarind acidity curtailing any excess while dragging the fray to impressive length. Far from cloying, it is brilliantly balanced on the precipice of OTT, without falling down the wrong side of it. Not as savory, moreish and complete, however, as the standard recioto.

Made only in vintages with a minimum of 90% botrytis. This is a wisp in the mouth, almost unimaginably savory and featherweight, such is the cleansing sense of dryness that defines the phenomenal finish. This has the sensation of a great TBA from the Mosel, with a patina of exotic aromatic sensations melding into an ineffable dryness. The finish is extremely long. A profound wine. The oldest vines in all of Soave: pre-phylloxera centurions, many nearly 140-years-old. The vinosity, sap, mineral undercurrent and sheer persuasiveness of the package, attests to this. A tour de force. Sure, there is the usual crew of stone fruits, ginger crystal, jasmine, frangipani and sea spray salinity. Yet there is also textural persuasion, all chew and chomp, amidst a bowl of scented orchard fruits flecked with botrytised high tones of mango skin. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.

This finely meshed white offers poached apricot, pineapple and tangerine fruit flavors that are rich, juicy and enlivened by zesty milled white pepper and pink grapefruit peel notes, which work in tandem with the bright acidity to provide fine balance. Long and minerally, with tactile hints of almond skin and chalk playing on the finish. Drink now through 2028. 800 cases made, 100 cases imported.

The 2020 may have been considerably more concentrated than this vintage, and yet there is something more mellifluous, intuitive of feel and graceful to this 2021. A salty lead of preserved lemons, quince, tangerines and stone fruit. Incisive mineral precision and wet pebble complexity. This would make a worthy replacement for a top Chablis. Volcanic and alive. Scored on drinkability quotient. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

The 2001 Soave Classico La Frosca makes itself known by mixing crushed pears with hints of raw honey and almond paste to create a seductive bouquet. This is round yet remarkably energetic, contrasting citrus-tinged apples against tropical inner florals and hints of custard. It tapers off pretty and remarkably fresh with nuances of ground ginger. This is incredibly pretty and balanced, also in no fear of decline. The 2001 is a pleasure to taste.

The 2011 Soave Classico La Froscà is honeyed and floral in the glass, as sour melon and kiwi give way to a hint of lemon custard. Its textures are round, yet energy remains incredibly high through a core of saline-infused acidity. This becomes incredibly floral through the finale, adding an almondy richness ag the mouth waters for more.

One of the iconic wines of the denomination, this gorgeous, polished white opens with enticing scents of yellow stone fruit, summer wildflowers and hay along with a whiff of wet slate. Elegantly structured, the delicious palate doles out ripe apricot, white peach and tangerine drop candy before a savory—almost salty—almond finish. While it's wonderful now, it will continue to evolve and age beautifully for years. Drink through 2030.

The 2019 Soave Classico La Frosca wafts up with honeyed florals, ground ginger and hints of smoke. This soothes with its silky textures, while nervous acidity enlivens the experience and adds a cascading sensation to its mineral-tinged orchard fruits. There's so much concentration here. It leaves the palate caked in chalky minerals while finishing lightly structured. This zesty rendition of La Froscà will take some time to fully blossom, but it's packed full of potential.

The 2020 Soave Classico La Froscà is smoky with pungent florals and hints of tropical peach. This is round and enveloping, balanced by a core of saline-minerals and zesty citrus-tinged acids with vivid green apple fruits. It finishes long and lightly structured, reverberating with tension as a lime skin nuance lingers. The majority of La Froscà is refined in stainless steel for one to two years on the lees with about 20% completed in large casks.

The 2016 Soave Classico La Froscà is rich and alluring with notes of dried peach, sweet white flowers and honeyed almonds. It displays wonderful clarity and poise while stimulating the senses with bright acids and minerals before settling on ripe orchard fruits. A twang of sour citrus and apricot resonates throughout the long and almost salty finish. I tasted the 2016 over the course of two days and it only got better each time I revisited it. The La Froscà matures in a combination of 80% steel tanks and 20% barriques, yet there’s not a hint of wood here.

A vivid display of wet stone, kiwi, apricots and smoky minerals lifts up from the 2018 Soave Classico La Froscà. It’s silky and pliant upon entry, yet it quickly gains energetic thrust through a mix of zesty acids and salty minerals. The palate literally buzzes with residual tension, as a tart note of Granny Smith apple completes the expression perfectly. This is simply stunning today, and it’s worth cellaring over the medium term as well.

90-year-old vines on typically volcanic soils. Handled in large format oak, rather than the steel tanks of other properties. This confers a dried straw quality, not dissimilar to the scents of freshly laid tatami mat. Glazed quince, white pepper, jasmine and crystalline ginger, to boot. Wonderful intensity and spread of fruit, with the low sulphur regime playing a trump card of mellifluous drinkability. Drink or hold.

Exceptional Soave from a producer firmly entrenched in the regional firmament. The 2013 Valpolicella Superiore Le Mattoline seduces with a heady display of maraschino cherries, sweet autumnal spices and dusty dried roses. While silky and finessed, there are depths of red berry fruits and chalky mineral tones, all enlivened by brisk acids. This leaves peppery violet florals and hints of raspberry while tapering off incredibly long. Le Mattoline is a serious step up from your average Valpolicella, and it has gotten even better since the last time I tasted.

Maraschino cherry liqueur doused with fennel, black licorice strap, hedgerow and sandalwood. The small portion of dried fruit imparts density, without overwhelming the sense of compression and freshness. This is an excellent, impactful wine of remarkable levity, despite the obvious weight. A long, sumptuous finish, not issimilar to a heady Pinot. This is very persuasive and thoroughly impressive. The sort of Valpo, bright, crunchy and translucent, that I love to drink. Drink or hold.
