The 2017 Barolo is a broad and thickly concentrated expression that definitely wears the marks of a hot growing season. The fruit is weighed by thick concentration, dark cherry and plum, all followed by plenty of earthy tones or crushed aspirin. You even get a hint of black truffle that is perfumed and sensual. The tannins on this wine are almost accessible now, and this wine can be enjoyed in the near term as well. I found this blended Barolo to be the most balanced of these three new releases from Silvio Grasso. Some 20,000 bottles were made.

Give this lots of air to get the loamy, black-fruit aromas with hints of lightly toasted vanilla oak. On the palate it’s full-bodied with very fine, firm tannins and a highly concentrated bead of lovely crushed black fruit and oak that lasts a long time. The 2015 Barolo Bricco Luciani is one of the more overt wines in this lineup. As is so often the case, the Luciani is also one of the more complete Barolos here. The Luciani is distinguished by its mid palate generosity and creamy, enveloping personality. Time in bottle will allow all of the wine’s pedigree to emerge nicely. A limited release of 2,000 bottles, the 2017 Barolo Bricco Manzoni draws its fruit from La Morra. Keeping in line with the characteristics of this village, you are indeed treated to softly floral notes of crushed violets and lavender followed by dried fruit, tar and spice. This wine shows a little bit of evolution, while dark fruit ripeness or hot-vintage oxidation gives it a heavier character and a more accessible personality. There is a touch of sweet cherry skin on the close.
