Brunello di Montalcino Selezione Zebras |

Review
Dense and powerful, featuring notes of black cherry, blackberry and raspberry. There's a serious base of tannins as this cruises to a lingering aftertaste of berry and mineral. Just beginning to show some development, with fine potential ahead. Best from 2013 through 2026. 250 cases made, 50 cases imported.

A rich, round style, boasting cherry, raspberry, tobacco and underbrush flavors. Ample tannins bolster the finish, but this remains balanced and long overall, with a tobacco-tinged aftertaste. Best from 2016 through 2032. 250 cases made.

Review
Deep red. Pure aromas of fresh red berries, herbs and licorice. Clean, crisp and juicy, with pure red fruit flavors supported by smooth tannins. The clean, long finish displays floral and mineral notes. Not especially concentrated or complex but nicely balanced and pure. This wine's curious name comes from the painting "Zebras" by Waltraud Redl, which is depicted on the colorful label.

The purity of fruit and floral character in this wine is very impressive. Full body, with superfine tannins and beautiful fruit. Long seamless texture to this wine from the ultra-fine tannins. Drink or hold.

Review
The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Zebras is aged 36 months in oak compared to 24 months for the base Brunello. That extra year in barrel has dampened out much of the fresh fruit that you get, albeit briefly, in this estate’s other Brunello. It replaces it with a greater sense of complexity and budding sophistication with ethereal tones of cola, balsam herb and smoked bacon. The fruit element revolves around dried blueberry and juicy black currant. The medium body is veiled by polished tannins, but also offers a very fine point of acidity that does a lot to lighten and enliven the load. Zebras is a somewhat offbeat wine with an enormously appealing, ever-evolving personality. Drink: 2016-2025.

Smells like a red Burgundy, featuring cherry, currant, earth and floral aromas and flavors. Elegant and firm, with fine depth and a saline, mineral finish. Despite their youthful grip on the finish for now, the tannins are well-integrated. Best from 2019 through 2035. 400 cases made, 200 cases imported.

Review
Spicy and dark from the start, the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Zebras offers a bigger, bolder style compared to the estate's base Brunello. There's more extraction and richness here as well as a deeper sense of dark fruit, leather, root beer and dried rosemary. All that intensity works together with seamless integration. In the mouth, the wine shows silky tannins and long persistency that is driven by licorice, cola and spice characteristics. This is a successful expression for the classic 2010 vintage that should hold well over the next decade or two.

Absolutely fantastic aromas of crushed berries and flowers. Full body, such purity of fruit and ripe tannins. It goes on for minutes. A concentrated yet layered red. Incredible. A selection of the best grapes from this small estate. Drink or hold.

Review
Villa I Cipressi's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Zebras is dark and inviting to the core. Black cherry and plum notes show the more intense side of Sangiovese. Hints of spice, leather and licorice develop in the glass, adding further shades of nuance while sweet, silky tannins add to the wine's near term approachability. This is a surprisingly juicy, fruit-driven style for I Cipressi and the vintage overall, but it works. ( Proprietor Dario Ciacci opted to not make his top selection, the Brunello Zebras, in 2011. Instead, all the best fruit went into the straight Brunello.)

Review
Of Villa i Cipressi's two wines, this one represents a special selection of fruit executed in a more contemporary style. The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Zebras ages in oak for 30 months and you can taste that extra spice and toast within its thicker texture. The bouquet is bold, but balanced, with dark fruit, leather and tobacco. The wine is ripe, dense and nicely concentrated in terms of mouthfeel.

Review
Deep red. Musky red fruits, leather and bitter chocolate on the distinctly Old World nose. Then supple and broad, but with lovely lift and verve to the fine-grained flavors of red berries, tru!e and wild herbs. Lively acidity provides this medium-bodied wine with a welcome degree of firmness and freshness. Richer and sweeter than this estate’s 2012 Brunello Classico, this is a real step up in complxity and concentration.

Review
Sporting opulent substance and structure, the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Zebras is a full-bodied expression of Sangiovese that shows deep layers and lots of black fruit. There is spice, leather and balsam herb at the back. This remains a bright, polished and well-integrated Brunello with a modern or contemporary personality. This wine represents a special selection of fruit and is only made in the best years. Only 4,000 bottles were made.

Review
The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Zebras is a robust and opulent expression that shows good balance and harmony. Aged 36 months in wood, it presents good primary intensity with blackberry and plum, but you also get evolved or aged tones of spice, leather and campfire ash. In terms of mouthfeel, these wines from Villa I Cipressi are distinguished by their roundness and textural softness. This special Brunello release of 6,000 bottles is no different. However, the Zebras is more powerful than others in terms of tannins and structure.

Review
The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Zebras from Villa I Cipressi shows spiced orange peels, clove, mentholated herbs, white pepper and just a hint of wild strawberry. The textures are silky and refined, balanced by bright acids and cooling minerals with cherry-berry fruits. Fine-grained tannins slowly settle in, adding grip with each passing moment, and leading up to a classically dry and structured finale. This has all of the necessary elements to evolve nicely with cellaring, but I do worry if it will never fully shake o! the wood influence in its bouquet.

Review
The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Selezione Zebras is darkly floral, wafting up with a beguiling blend of dried roses and violets giving way to hints of licorice, lavender and finally crushed blackberries. This displays textures of pure silk, coming across round and pliant, with soothing wild berry fruits and a note of cedar that adds contrast toward the close. The 2019 leaves a coating of fine tannins and hints of balsamic spice, tapering o! savory and full of youthful tension.

A medium-bodied red with cherries, blueberry and hints of cedar and sandalwood. Medium body. Attractive fine tannins that are fresh and not drying. From organically grown grapes. Very attractive to drink now, but will be much better in two or three years. Drink after 2025.
