Review
The 2019 Barbaresco Cole is, as always, the most potent wine in this range. A blast of black cherry, plum, mocha, new leather, spice, licorice and menthol hits the palate, followed by the big, bruising tannins that are such a signature of this site. Like the Basarin, the Cole has an exotic feeling of ripeness in 2019.

The Moccagatta 2019 Barbaresco Cole is beautifully sharp and defined, boasting a luminous ruby color and medium weight. The wine is redolent of red cherry, sour plum, licorice root and powdery crushed stone. The tannins are firm but also silky, and I'm betting on an elegant future bottle evolution for this classic vintage.

A polished red, boasting bright cherry and raspberry flavors that cozy up to toasty oak, with accents of hay, juniper and suede adding depth. Poised, vibrant and long, with an aftertaste of red fruit, vanilla and mineral. Best from 2025 through 2042. 250 cases made, 80 cases imported.

Review
The 2018 Barbaresco Cole is a bit less of a powerhouse than it can be. Sweet, spiced aromatics lead into a core of ripe red/purplish berry fruit. The 2018 is still coming together after its bottling this past summer. It is less bombastic and a bit more linear than is typically the case. All things considered, that is not a bad thing. There is a touch of astringency on the finish that is hard to get past.

The Moccagatta 2018 Barbaresco Cole opens to a medium garnet color and lots of bright primary fruit that pops from the bouquet. There are layers of raspberry, fresh cherry and Japanese plum, spice and powdered licorice. The tannins are slender and softened, giving this wine a silky personality. Production is 2,300 bottles.

Cherry and camphor flavors are the main themes in this Barbaresco, with flourishes of vanilla, savory spices and pipe tobacco. The texture is dense and finely woven, as this builds to a lingering conclusion with a spicy finish. Best from 2025 through 2039. 160 cases made, 80 cases imported.

Lots of rose-petal aromas with dark fruit and hints of orange peel. Medium-to full-bodied with layers of fine tannins and a persistent finish. Give this another two or three years, but it’s very balanced for this producer. Try after 2024.

Review
The Cole vineyard is located in the comune or village of Barbaresco, and Moccagatta farms a half-hectare parcel. The 2017 Barbaresco Cole (aged in barrique for 18 months) offers a slightly more robust textural fabric with pronounced tones of black fruit, spice and spent ember. The oak presence is felt both in the softness and richness of the aromas and in the power and structure of the mouthfeel. Of these three new releases from Moccagatta, this wine will probably go the furthest in terms of its drinking window. Production is small at 2,700 bottles.

Perfumed and expressive, this red reveals floral, cherry, vanilla and sandalwood aromas and flavors, with a hefty dose of raspy tannins courtesy of the new oak. Ripe and generous midpalate, it shows good balance overall, just needing time to absorb the oak. Best from 2023 through 2040. 160 cases made, 80 cases imported.

The 2013 Barbaresco Cole is my favorite Moccagatta release from this vintage. This expression does not hold back in termsof fruity intensity, but the overall ripeness feels more contained and integrated. This mid-weight wine is thick and expertly extracted with a long succession of black fruit, licorice and savory spice flavors.

Black cherry, tar, tobacco and earth notes mingle in this chunky red. There are plenty of tannins for support and this finishes fresh, showing fine balance overall. Fruit, spice and iron accents grace the aftertaste. Best from 2017 through 2027.

Review
The 2013 Barbaresco Cole emerges from a tiny, postcard-sized parcel just before the start of Montestefano. The Cole is always the richest and broadest of the Moccagatta Barbarescos. Curiously, this is also the first of the estate's vineyards to ripen. An exotic mélange of dark cherry jam, wild flowers, mint, lavender and mocha takes shape in the glass. The 100% new oak is clearly felt but is also very nicely integrated just the same. This racy, forward, intense Barbaresco captures the essence of the Moccagatta house style.

Review
The 2014 Barbaresco Cole is the richest, deepest and most powerful of these four Barbarescos from Moccagatta. Today, the 2014 comes across as quite unctuous and deep, with a real feeling of gravitas that runs through the wine. An infusion of black cherry, plum, mocha, licorice and dark spice leads into the huge, textured finish. The late harvest produced very ripe, dark-toned fruit with a level of unctuousness that marries well with the new French oak.

A distinctive nose of vanilla and sweet spices leads off, followed by a core of ripe cherry, plum, licorice and tar flavors. The texture is smooth and plush despite the youth. Shows a fine confluence of complex fruit, spice and savory notes on the vibrant, taut finish. Best from 2022 through 2040.

Review
The 2014 Barbaresco Cole is a nicely balanced and intense red wine. The fruit shows a ripe and slightly soft quality that is not uncommon in this vintage of Barbaresco (despite how counterintuitive that may seem for what is generally accepted as a cool vintage). This wine tastes like it came from a hot vintage instead. The finish is rich and almost chewy.

Review
The 2015 Barbaresco Cole is the most unctuous and deep of these wines. Because of its small production relative to the other Barbarescos in the range, the Cole gets the most new French oak. Powerful and concentrated in the glass, the Cole is a deep, unctuous Barbaresco that leans towards the darker end of the Nebbiolo flavor spectrum, all qualities that are enhanced and further brought out by the new oak.

Review
The 2015 Barbaresco Cole shows extra ripeness, structure and fruit extraction. This is a warm-vintage Nebbiolo, and the darkness and intensity of the fruit leaves little doubt about this fact. There is some astringent tightness—this is a quality you find across the Moccagatta line—but this vintage is better suited to medium-term consumption. Only 3,000 bottles were made.

A very fruit-forward and ripe Barbaresco with lots of toasted barrique character coming through, giving a meaty and blackberry-tinged impression. Hints of dried cloves. Extremely chewy on the full-bodied palate with blockbuster fruit and dense tannins. Some may consider it overdone, but others will love the brashness. Drink from 2027.

The 2016 Barbaresco Cole (with only 3,000 bottles made) offers toasted notes of espresso rind, dark fruit and light tones of exotic spice. The wine is juicy, generous and fruit-forward with lots of dark concentration and saturated berry notes. The wine is bigger than your standard Barbaresco, and it's ready to serve with marinated, grilled steak tips.

The 2016 Barbaresco Cole shows the muscular, virile personality that is so typical of this tiny site in the village of Barbaresco. Graphite, smoke, leather, licorice and dark spice add to a feeling of gravitas. Readers will have to give the 2016 at least a few years in bottle to soften as the tannins are imposing at this early stage. As always, the Cole is the most muscular and explosive wine in the range. In 2016, everything comes together in a superb Barbaresco that has so much to offer.

The most overt wine in the range, 2016 Barbaresco Cole is powerful and bombastic, as it so often is, with a real sense of gravitas and tons of sheer character. Plum, chocolate, spice, new leather and sweet French oak are all kicked up a few notches in this decidedly opulent, massive Barbaresco from Moccagatta.

The 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Cole is a powerhouse. A blast of dark plum fruit, mocha, espresso and sweet French oak all race across the palate. The 2020 spent 30 months in French oak, 50% new. Not surprisingly, the Riserva is a pretty extroverted wine that will please lovers of this style. I admire the richness and density here, but find the oak at the limit. The site lends itself well to Riserva, but I think there would be more site character with less oak.
