A plump, robust barbera with plenty of ripe black fruit aromas and flavors, full body and minimal tannin. A hint of heat right at the end from the declared 15.5% vol alcohol, but enjoyable overall. Drink now.

Mint, sweet autumn spices and hints of graphite, stones and tar to the dried oranges and earthy, mossy raspberries. This is quite a juicy and full-bodied Barolo with tight and velvety tannins. Flavorful, long and discreetly modern with an ethereal finish. Has immediate appeal, too. Drink or hold.

The Livia Fontana 2016 Barolo Riserva Bussia reveals a tight texture thatmakes a good sounding board for aromas of wild berry, dried cherry, pressed rose and licorice root. The wine is lean and sharp, hitting thepalate with firm tannins and balanced freshness. This wine drinks wellnow but should also hold past the 10-year mark. Only 2,392 bottles were produced.

Review
Today Livia Fontana is running her father's estate with her sons, producing very focused Barolos with precise and somewhat modern winemaking. In the 2017 vintage, this style was helpful. Ruby in colour, very pale and bright, aromas are restrained if not reductive. Peachy with red cherry and vanilla scents are enhanced by meaty notes, suggestive of its graceful and fresh complexity. The attack is graceful as well, with refined tannins, and a warming, dusty, oaky finish. Well judged and well handled.

Review
From a hot and dry vintage, the Livia Fontana 2017 Barolo Riserva Bussiaoffers medium fruit weight with lots of simple, light and bright aromas. The wine is more accessible overall, but it shows good fruit energy andyouth that comes as a surprise given the scorching vintage conditionsand its Riserva status. This wine transcends all of those other issues.

Aromas of dried red cherries, together with a melange of bright, fresh herbs and a darker sous-bois note, following through to a full-bodied palate to give plenty of flavor. The tannins are fine and though on the chewy side, the spicy fruit flows nicely through the long finish. Good balance here and it will mature nicely, so give it due time in the cellar. Try in 2026.

The Livia Fontana 2018 Barolo Villero is a lean-bodied wine with shinygarnet highlights. This vintage delivers simple fruit fl avors and is one-dimensional overall. Fruit is from one of the best sites in CastiglioneFalletto, but this was a challenging vintage. Dark fruit, licorice andcrushed fl owers emerge quickly from the bouquet.

Aromas of dried red cherries and rose-like florals follow through to a medium- to full-bodied palate where the fine and firm tannins are coated with a welcome orange peel flavor. Rather chewy finish but the orange peel note endures. Lacks a little of the complexity and profundity you expect from this top site in Castiglione Falletto, but it’s polished. Try from 2025.
