Trentino Alto Adige

SANTA MARGHERITA DI ALA (Province of Trento): The climate during the winter was average, it was long, but not very cold. There were some late snowfalls (one in May). The budding phase of the vines started late and all the subsequent phases were also late. In May, June and at the beginning of July it was very rainy. In September it was cold.

Tiziano Tommasi – Azienda La Cadalora (Vallagarina IGT): “..this year the harvest of the white varietals was more that ten days late, while the harvest of the red varietals was 15-20 days late…The vineyard management required a lot of work this year and we had to spray the vines more often. We follow organic practices so that we mainly used copper and sulphur base products. We do not spray insecticides as we use the sexual confusion technique against pests. We have eliminated weedkillers and we leave a grass cover on the aisles between the rows of vines. We control the grass with a special machine so that only the leguminous plants (such as clover) and the grasses that do not grow too high are selected…We started picking Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio on the 12th of September and the week after we started picking Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer (we usually pick these varieties at the end of August/beginning of September). We picked the red varieties after the beginning of October. The grapes were perfect and flawless. The climate was ideal this year for the white varietals: the aromatics are good, the wines are fresh. The same goes for Pinot Noir……. ”

VARNA (Province of Bolzano): The winter was not too cold but it was long. There was less snow than usual. There were rainfalls in May and in June and this was good for the vines as it gave them a good water supply. Before the harvest it was cold at night and this was positive for the aromatics and for the acidity of the grapes.

Günther Kerschbaumer – Tenuta Köfererhof (Alto Adige Valle Isarco DOC, Gewürztraminer, Kerner, Müller Thurgau, Pinot Grigio, Riesling, Silvaner, Veltliner): “..we started ten days later than usual (as the vegetation phase of the vines started later) on the 12th of October and we finished on the 2nd of November. In our area, as it is high and ventilated, there were no problems with disease. It rained less here than in Trentino, Veneto and Friuli. The wines are still fermenting, but the aromatics and the acidity are good and the alcohol strength is excellent. The grape yield was normal. 2013 is a good vintage..”
