The island of Pantelleria is a luminous volcanic fragment that lies at the center of the Mediterranean Sea, between the continents of Europe and Africa, exactly 40 nautical miles from Cape Mustafà in Tunisia and 60 nautical miles from Cape Granatola in Sicily. The climate is extremely windy, humid, and dry, and the vines are grown in individual conche (deep holes) 20cm deep for protection against the wind. The only significant wine of the island, aside from small quantities produced for local consumption, is Passito di Pantelleria, produced with Zibibbo (commonly known as Moscato d’Alessandria).
The Ferrandes Family, of Spanish descent, moved to Pantelleria in the 15th century, and has grown Zibibbo since their arrival. The generous fertility of the volcanic soil and the artisanal care of a family run agricultural business allows them to obtain the highest quality products such as capers, raisins, and of course, its “legendary nectar”, Passito di Pantelleria. The vines are cultivated in hollows with the low bush training system (Alberello in conca). The low bush vine of Pantelleria has been inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity as a “creative and sustainable” practice.
With passion and determination, Salvatore Ferrandes and his wife Domenica produce a traditional and unique dessert wine.
