Abruzzo

Thanks to a rainy winter with abundant rainfall throughout the region, good water reserves have been built up in the vineyards.

The seasonal trend changed between February and early March, when mild temperatures reached 20 ° C in the coastal strip.

As has been happening for some years now, a sharp drop in temperature occurred in mid-April, but without serious consequences on the newly sprouted varieties, thanks to a slight vegetative delay which helped to overcome the frost. From the end of May onwards, the beautiful days and high temperatures favored the development of good vegetation and a normal release of well-formed and uniform clusters for all varieties.

The high temperatures that followed one another from late spring to summer allowed the vine to have a normal vegetative-productive activity, with the reduction of fungicidal interventions. The course of flowering and fruit set was also regular.

The lack of rain in the months of June, July and August caused major problems of water suffering especially in the hilly and mountainous vineyard areas, which abound in the Abruzzo region, in non-irrigated and exposed land. This situation will lead to a decrease in the weight of the grapes and a low cellar yield. From a health point of view, the vines did not need frequent treatments due to the good weather and are in excellent condition, albeit with small grape sizes, especially for international white vines.

The harvest began from August 16 for the early varieties (Chardonnay, Pinot grigio) in the more coastal areas, while for the more inland and hilly areas around August 23. For the other white grapes (Trebbiano, Malvasia, Passerina and Pecorino) the the start of the contributions took place at the beginning of September. For the red grape varieties, mainly Sangiovese and Montepulciano, it is expected that the harvest will take place from the last week of September until the end of October.

The sugar content of the grapes is expected to be good and at the moment slightly above average (+0.5 babo).

Qualitatively speaking, if the climatic conditions of the month of September proceed favorably, we can assume an interesting vintage for red wines, while whites, due to the strong heat, will lack freshness and structure.
