At the foothills of the Majella mountains sits the Filomusi-Guelfi family estate, residents of this high Apennine massif since the 1500s. Located in Tocco di Casauria within the province of Pescara, the estate was founded when the Filomusi and Guelfi families became related through marriage, ultimately bringing their joint property ownership to a total of 9 hectares. From these hectares, the family has been farming fruit and making wine each year since these humble beginnings almost 500 years ago. Tocco di Casauria is considered the “cradle” of the Montepulciano grape variety, confirmed by documents in the family’s possession dating back to 1821.
Lorenzo, who sadly passed away in 2018, inherited the estate in 1983. His first wines, the 1987 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo and the 1988 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Cerasuolo (a traditional rosè), were bottled in 1990. Lorenzo realized that wine production not only represented the history of his family, but also its future. Today, his children, Alessandro and Giovanni, with his same love of the estate continue the production of wines in the family business with the help of the agronomist Lorenzo Costantini. The conditions for viticulture in this area are unique, a very airy and dry zone. The phenolic and sugar ripening of the grapes is optimal together with excellent acidity due to the extremely wide temperature range between night and day. The result is beautifully crafted wines reflecting a long family history of dedication to the land.
“Words, like everything else, are linked to their origins. The term “wine” has its roots in the Sanskrit verb vena, “to love”. This is why, I believe, a good wine never comes by chance, nor it can be the result of laboratory experiments, but only and only of Love. ”
